본 프로젝트는 단순한 놀이 구조물이 아니라, 고양이의 본능적 도전과 사용자의 감각적 경험을 동시에 담아내는 장치로 설계했다. ‘클라이밍 문제’에서 영감을 얻었으며, 고양이가 스스로 길을 선택하고 도전하면서 정상에 도달하는 과정을 경험하게 하는 것을 목표로 했다.
구조 전체는 하나의 고정된 루트가 아닌 다양한 경로들로 이루어져 있습니다. 한쪽에는 계단형 루트를 두어 처음 시도하는 고양이도 쉽게 접근할 수 있도록 했으며, 발판 간격을 넓히거나 균형을 요구하는 루트는 호기심 많고 활동적인 고양이가 점프와 균형을 통해 도전감을 느낄 수 있도록 설계했다.
또한, 경사진 천 표면은 발톱을 사용해 오를 수 있는 경로가 되고, 내부 구멍과 은신 공간은 탐험이나 조용한 활동을 선호하는 고양이에게 맞는 경험을 제공한다. 모든 길은 결국 최상부 공간으로 이어지며, 고양이는 매번 상황과 기분에 따라 새로운 루트를 선택해 오르내리며 놀이와 성취감을 동시에 얻게 된다.
외관적으로는 구조가 무너질 듯한 불안정한 균형감을 의도적으로 표현했다. 이와 더불어, 주요 구조 일부에는 줄을 걸어 약간의 흔들림과 긴장감을 느낄 수 있도록 하여, 고양이가 이동할 때마다 순간적인 불안정성이 생겨 더 높은 집중과 몰입을 유도한다.
이러한 긴장 요소는 고양이뿐 아니라, 이를 지켜보는 사용자에게도 고양이의 움직임 하나하나가 예측 불가한 긴장과 기대감을 선사한다. 결국 이 작품은 고양이의 신체적 도전, 사용자의 감각적 공감, 그리고 긴장 속 몰입의 경험을 동시에 만들어낸다.
Tense Elevation is not merely a play structure—it’s a device designed to capture both the instinctive challenges of a cat and the sensory engagement of its human observer. Inspired by the concept of “climbing problems,” the project encourages cats to choose their own paths and experience the process of reaching the summit through exploration and determination.
Rather than offering a single fixed route, the structure is composed of multiple pathways. One side features a stair-like route, allowing easy access for cats new to climbing. Other paths, with wider gaps and balance-demanding platforms, are tailored for curious and active cats who seek excitement through jumping and coordination.
Sloped fabric surfaces provide claw-friendly climbing zones, while internal holes and hidden nooks cater to cats who prefer quiet exploration or cozy retreats. All paths ultimately lead to the topmost space, allowing cats to ascend and descend in different ways depending on their mood and situation—offering both play and a sense of accomplishment.
Visually, the structure intentionally conveys a sense of precarious balance, as if it might collapse at any moment. Some key components are suspended with ropes to introduce subtle swaying and tension, creating fleeting instability with each movement. This not only heightens the cat’s focus and immersion but also delivers a sense of unpredictability and anticipation to the viewer.
In essence, Tense Elevation is a fusion of physical challenge for the cat, sensory empathy for the user, and immersive tension that binds both in a shared experience.
